If you have not wrapped up your 2025 federal tax return, now is the time to gather your documents, reach out to our team, and decide whether to file or request an extension. More Than Just Tax Returns: What Else is Due April 15?

Whether you plan to finalize your paperwork now or push it to the fall, here is what must be handled by the April 15 deadline:

  • Paying your 2025 tax bill: Filing an automatic extension (Form 4868) gives you until October 15 to submit your actual return, but it does not give you extra time to pay. To dodge late penalties and mounting interest, you need to estimate what you owe and send that payment to the IRS by April 15.
  • Q1 2026 estimated payments: If you are self-employed or run a small business, your first quarter estimated tax payment for 2026 is also due. Even if your 2025 return is on extension, you still have to calculate and submit this first 2026 installment.
  • IRA contributions: Want to max out your retirement savings for 2025? You have until April 15 to fund a Traditional or Roth IRA for the prior year. An extension will not give you more time to make these deposits.
  • Foreign bank reporting (FBAR): If you held $10,000 or more in foreign accounts at any point during 2025, your FBAR is due. Fortunately, if you miss this one, the system grants an automatic extension to October 15—just make sure you do not miss that final window, as the non-compliance penalties are famously severe and can quickly drain your accounts.
  • 2022 refund claims: The three-year statute of limitations to claim an old refund from 2022 closes permanently on April 15, 2026. Once that date passes, the IRS keeps the cash, regardless of your original entitlement.
