December 2025 Tax Deadlines to Remember

As we approach the end of 2025, it's crucial to keep several important tax dates in mind, encompassing year-end planning, tip reporting, IRA withdrawals, and final payments for deductible expenses. Stay ahead of these deadlines to ensure a smooth tax filing process.

December 1 - Initiate Year-End Tax Strategies

The early part of December is the ideal time to implement any remaining tax strategies for the year. If you've experienced significant changes in your financial situation, like variations in income or shifts in marital or dependent status, or if you've been involved in property sales, it's wise to schedule a tax planning consultation to make necessary adjustments.

December 10 - Tip Reporting Deadline

For employees earning tips, it's mandatory to report tips exceeding $20 received in November to your employer using IRS Form 4070 by December 10. Your employer must then withhold relevant FICA and income taxes from your regular wages. In cases where wages don't cover the required withholding, your W-2 will reflect the amount of uncollected taxes in box 8, which must be paid when filing your tax return.

December 31 - Mandatory IRA Distributions

If you were born before January 1, 1952, be sure to withdraw funds from your Traditional IRA by December 31 to avoid penalties. For those turning 73 in 2025, it’s your first required distribution year, though you may defer it until April 1, 2026.

December 31 - Final Day for 2025 Deductibles

Ensure all deductible expenses are paid by December 31 to count them towards your 2025 tax return. Note that contributions to IRA, SEP, or Keogh plans may still be made post-December 31, 2025.

December 31 - End of Year Considerations

Bear in mind, if you're trying to accomplish financial tasks that can't be completed in one day, start earlier than December 31 as some institutions might be closed.
