New Auto Loan Interest Deduction: A 2025 Guide for Car Buyers

It has been a long time since most Americans could deduct interest on a personal vehicle loan. However, thanks to proposed regulations under the "One Big Beautiful Bill Act," that is changing for loans originating after December 31, 2024. If you are in the market for a new ride, this temporary relief—valid for tax years 2025 through 2028—could significantly lower your taxable income.

Is Your Next Vehicle Tax Deductible?

This isn't a blanket deduction for every car buyer. To keep the tax benefit targeted, Congress has set specific guardrails regarding who can claim it and which vehicles qualify. Here is the breakdown of the eligibility requirements:

  • Income Phaseouts: The benefit begins to phase out if your modified AGI exceeds $150,000 (single) or $250,000 (married filing jointly).

  • The Deduction Cap: You can deduct up to $10,000 in interest annually per tax return. Note that if you file married filing separately, the $10,000 limit applies to each filer individually.

  • Personal Use Requirement: The vehicle must be anticipated for personal use more than 50% of the time at the moment of purchase. You do not need to adjust this in future years even if that percentage drops.

The "American-Made" Requirement

To support domestic manufacturing, this deduction is strictly for new passenger vehicles assembled in the U.S. with a gross vehicle weight rating below 14,000 pounds. This includes cars, SUVs, pickup trucks, and minivans.

Before signing any paperwork, we recommend verifying the vehicle's assembly location using its VIN. You can check that status here: Welcome to VIN Decoding : provided by vPIC

What About Mixed-Use Vehicles?

Many of our clients use vehicles for both family errands and business travel. If you split usage, you can still claim a business expense deduction for that portion of the interest. This reduces what you claim on the new Schedule 1-A proportionally. It is a bit of a balancing act, but we can help you run the numbers to ensure you remain compliant with the personal use requirement.

The Mechanics of Claiming the Deduction

Documentation is everything in our world. This is a "below-the-line" deduction, meaning it is available even if you take the standard deduction. Here is what you need to look out for:

  • Form 1098-VLI: Lenders are required to file this new form if they receive at least $600 in interest from you. It will contain the loan details and the vehicle VIN, which must be reported on your return.

  • 2025 Transition Rule: For the 2025 tax year, the IRS is allowing lenders to provide a simple statement showing the interest paid in lieu of the formal Form 1098-VLI.

Important Note: Interest on leases or loans from family members does not qualify. The loan must be secured by the vehicle and originate from an independent lender, such as a bank or credit union.

Navigating these new rules can be tricky, specifically regarding the phaseouts and mixed-use calculations. If you are eyeing a new purchase, please reach out to our office so we can ensure it fits into your broader tax strategy.
